The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that idea — fears that are unique to each person."
The core mechanic involves controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
