The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.
The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
