Scream Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Franchise with Scream 7.

The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a massive family reunion. This new chapter marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.

"Coming back to a character you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.

An Unexpected Return for Fallon Favorites

Reports have confirmed that a trio of distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though dying in prior movies. The precise method of their return is still unclear. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Weight of Iconic Legacy

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the exact moment he got the offer from the original writer.

"I recall the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That moment is permanently etched on my mind," he says. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the decades since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.

"Truthfully, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."

The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fans

Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved series.

"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the franchise. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Speculation and Excitement Run High

While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are in some way all alive in a strange shared scenario. The possibility of a self-referential narrative, reminiscent of classic horror movies, also exists.

Moviegoers will find out the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
