New Year's Partygoers Told to Bundle Up with Snowfall Predicted Across the UK
Weather experts are saying a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow likely throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Continue Amid Warnings
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are planned to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," said the Met Office.
Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies
Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Temperatures are due to be chilly, meaning additional clothing essential, according to forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Widespread Advisories for Friday
Moving into Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Readings Set to Fall Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Medical Advisories Activated
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this meant the weather could to trigger notable consequences across medical and care provision. This involves a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
