Los Angeles Battles Historic Heat Just One Week After Major Winter Weather.
Following a week of torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across areas in the city, Los Angeles is now confronting unusually high weather for late February.
Record-Shattering Temperatures
By Friday afternoon, the temperature climbed to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in central LA, according to the National Weather Service. This exceeds the old record for this date, which was 88°F (31°C) and was recorded in the previous year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were highlighted on forecast charts for the region.
Public Health Advisories
Authorities cautioned that Friday's conditions posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their guidance suggested:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Never leaving kids or animals unattended in a parked vehicle.
An Extreme Reversal
This sharp rise in mercury comes on the heels of a powerful storm system that battered the state last week. That storm brought thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to the mountains, leading to evacuation orders for countless residents.

Forecast Ahead
Forecasters predict some relief will arrive. Temperatures were forecast to fall to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in downtown LA by overnight.
Other locales that experienced 90°F included Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Meanwhile, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were expected to experience the upper eighties.
For the weekend, central Los Angeles can expect readings in the 80s, with mid-70s temperatures on tap for the week ahead.
