Ethiopia Receives Valuable Artefacts After a Century Holding in a German Family
Exactly 12 historical artefacts were officially restored to Ethiopia following remaining by a household from Germany for over ten decades.
These treasures, initially gathered in the early twentieth century by Germany's then-envoy to the Ethiopian empire Franz Weiss and his wife Hedwig, were handed over on Wednesday to the Ethiopian Studies Institute at the capital's university.
The set featured headpieces, protective shields and canvases, all regarded as historically important in the nation.
"The items continue to stand as a symbol of the lasting and friendly ties between Germany and Ethiopia," remarked the German diplomat, the envoy to Ethiopia.
Dr. Ramon Wyss, whose parent was born during the family's diplomatic posting in Ethiopia, handed over the objects at a event witnessed by the Minister of Tourism Selamawit Kassa.
He explained that the household's goal to restore the items was to "showcase their beauty with the audience and preserve the culture and history connected to my parent's birth."
The artefacts were either gifts or buys, according to the household.
"I would like to express gratitude to the Weiss relatives for practically showing their profound appreciation for Ethiopia by diligently safeguarding these treasures and vitally ensuring their return to their proper homeland," stated the minister of tourism.
The minister continued that the items would in the near future be opened to the general audience for investigation and academic study, terming the action a landmark in safeguarding the nation's cultural heritage.
"Initiatives persist to repatriate historical artifacts that are located in the hands of private persons and institutions around the world," she stated.
