Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family go about their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
