A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The event, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The craze became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: happy, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and cafecito as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
